We are a family of three - my husband J, my stepson E and me, D! Our almighty journey started when J and I met in 2010 and a couple of months later E and I met. We might not have known it but those meetings were the beginning of a beautiful family.
It hasn't always been easy, a blended family has it's ups and downs and when I went into it, I didn't have any friends who were step parents or in a blended family - everyone was either childless or biological parents. We had our honeymoon period, we moved in together which was a huge change for me not having my own space any more and for J having someone else with ideas on how to look after a child. Weekends were originally "E-time" (he lives interstate so that also means lots of time in the car) which meant couple time was restricted to after work during the week. That changed to fortnightly weekends with half of holidays - having longer with him in the holidays has been fantastic but brings it's new challenges of finding enough annual leave between us to manage. It's always a big change going from one state - a little family unit when E is with us - dad, stepmum and child, to DINKs - a "Double Income No Kids" couple when he's not. We would give the world for E to be with us all the time, we miss him when he's not here, but we've learnt to embrace our situation and most of the time we feel like we have the best of both worlds - a beautiful family and plenty of time for us to nourish our relationship!
The last two years have been particularly interesting - there has been a lot of conflict with E's mum which is sad. As we got closer to our wedding date in 2012 we were also finishing major renovations in our townhouse and at the same time bought our new home which we settled on and moved into a week after returning from our honeymoon. We bought a larger home because our plan was to start popping out bambinos after our wedding! And that is where our journey took a detour...
I've started this blog part way through our fertility adventure - I don't know when it will end, or how it will end but it's a whole new world for us, one we never thought we'd be a part of. There is still so much stigma associated with fertility treatment and whilst we've told quite a few people we're going through it, we haven't spoken about it publicly. I am quite happy to speak about it openly with most people - but unfortunately there are negative people who we know wouldn't hesitate to criticise, sneer or gossip about something that can be very painful and is a very personal issue. That's why we've chosen to stay (sort of!) anonymous in this blog, just using our initials. It may change in the future - who knows! But in the meantime I just hope that even one person may find comfort and even information in this blog. Building connections with other women online - both stepmothers and women going through fertility treatment - has been such a comfort for me especially over the last year.
For those of you who are currently trying to conceive - baby dust and all the best wishes in the world Y
